Yiwu Market: Districts, Goods and How Buyers Use It

Dated facts about the Yiwu International Trade Market, then a calculator for what the goods cost once they reach you.

The Yiwu market is a large wholesale trading area in Yiwu, Zhejiang, China, which sells Chinese-made small commodities at wholesale. This page pairs a guide to the market with a Landed cost calculator that shows what each unit costs you once freight, duty and fees are added, and what profit each unit makes at a selling price you choose. The calculator runs in your browser, is free, and uploads nothing. You type every number yourself, and it does not look up freight quotes or tariff rates. Read the guide below to understand how the Yiwu wholesale market works before you enter your figures.

How to use the Landed cost calculator

  1. Enter the unit price in USD.
  2. Enter the quantity.
  3. Enter the freight quote for the whole shipment. The tool does not estimate freight, so bring your own quote.
  4. Enter insurance if you buy it (optional).
  5. Enter the base duty rate in percent. Take it from the HTS code of your product.
  6. Enter each additional duty on China-origin goods in percent. Add every one that applies.
  7. Enter other dutiable additions, such as tooling.
  8. If they apply, turn on the merchandise processing fee (MPF) and harbor maintenance fee (HMF), and edit their rates.
  9. Enter broker and other fees, and the delivery cost to your warehouse.
  10. Optionally, enter a target selling price, selling fees in percent and a target margin.
  11. Read the total landed cost, the cost per unit, and the table showing each cost’s share. If you entered a selling price, read the profit per unit, margin, break-even price and the price needed for your target margin.

Buying from many stalls means many small invoices. Add each invoice as one total, or run the calculator separately for each product. Duty depends on each product’s HTS code, so use a separate base rate for each.

What is the Yiwu market?

The Yiwu market is a wholesale trading area founded in 1982 and administered by Zhejiang China Commodities City Group Co., Ltd. Its core is the Futian Market, with five districts and about 70,000 shops selling Chinese-made small commodities at wholesale; Xinhua now calls the complex the Yiwu International Trade Market. Most shops either buy goods from factories elsewhere in China and store them in Yiwu warehouses, or act as outlets for factories. A shop may therefore be a reseller, so ask who made each product and where.

What is sold in each district of the Yiwu market?

Each Futian district specialises in a group of products. The list below comes from a 2018 Yiwugo.com news item, so check the current layout before you travel.

  • District 1 (opened 2002): artificial flowers, toys, fashion jewellery, picture frames, arts and crafts, hair accessories.
  • District 2 (opened 2004): luggage and bags, umbrellas and raincoats, hardware, electrical items, locks, kitchenware, small appliances, telecom equipment, watches and clocks.
  • District 3 (opened 2004): stationery, cultural and sports products, cosmetics, eyeglasses, zippers, buttons, apparel accessories.
  • District 4 (opened 2008): socks, daily necessities, scarves, gloves, hats, footwear, belts, neckties, towels. Retail is only on the fourth floor, and the floors below sell in bulk.
  • District 5 (opened 2008): bedding, textiles, knitting materials, auto products and imported goods.

The same article warns that the market is easy to get lost in, so study the map before you visit.

How big is the Yiwu market?

Xinhua reports that the Yiwu International Trade Market has nearly 80,000 booths offering over 2.1 million types of commodities, and that it trades with 233 countries and regions. Figures differ between sources and years. The University of Copenhagen cites about 70,000 Futian shops and 1.7 million commodity types, and estimates 14,000 foreign traders from 100 countries live and work in Yiwu. Yiwu’s 2025 foreign trade reached a record 836.5 billion yuan.

Can I buy at the Yiwu market without an agent?

Some stalls sell retail and others sell only in bulk. The 2018 trade portal article says retail was limited to the fourth floor of District 4. Whether you can buy directly without an agent depends on the stall, and this page could not verify the rules, so confirm with official sources before you travel. Because many shops are resellers or factory outlets, ask who made each product before you pay.

How do I ship goods bought in Yiwu?

Shipping is one part of the landed cost. The calculator adds your goods value, freight, insurance, duty, dutiable additions, MPF, HMF, broker and other fees, and delivery to your warehouse to get the total landed cost. Duty is calculated on the goods value plus any dutiable additions you enter, because CBP’s transaction value excludes documented international freight and insurance. Divide the total by the quantity to get the cost per unit. Small China-origin parcels are not duty-free by default at the time of writing, so check CBP’s current rules before you ship.
