Is Alibaba Legit?

The marketplace is real; each supplier is a separate business. Enter what you see on a supplier's profile and get the risk signals, with sources.

Alibaba.com is a real marketplace run by Alibaba Group, which reports to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, but every supplier on it is a separate business, so whether an order is legit depends on the supplier you choose and the way you pay. The Supplier legitimacy checker on this page helps you judge one supplier at a time. It runs in your browser, is free, needs no sign-up, and uploads nothing. No website is queried either. You answer questions about what you see, and it lists risk signals based on what you entered. It is not an audit, a guarantee, or a verdict on any company. A trading company is a normal kind of business, so treat the result as a set of signals to check further.

How to use the Supplier legitimacy checker

  1. Say where you found the supplier and what verification status is shown on its profile.
  2. Say whether Trade Assurance is offered and what the supplier claims to be.
  3. Describe how wide the product range is.
  4. Say what a third-party audit report says, if the supplier has one.
  5. Enter where the supplier asks you to pay and how much you must pay before shipping.
  6. Mark whether the supplier refused a live video of the production floor, a factory audit, the business licence or a sample.
  7. Mark whether the price is far below other quotes you have received.
  8. Optional: enter the 18-character unified social credit code. The tool checks it against its check character and decodes the registering department, entity type and region code of the registration authority.
  9. Optional: paste the business scope in Chinese. The tool highlights manufacturing words (生产, 制造, 加工) and trade words (批发, 销售, 进出口) with English glosses.
  10. Read the result. Risk signals are marked High, Medium, Reassuring or Note, each with a reason and source links. Then check the “Looks like a manufacturer / Looks like a trading company / Unclear” card and the list of next checks.

Use the Print checklist button to print a one-page check sheet. It is useful for keeping a written record of each supplier you check.

Is Alibaba.com a real company?

Yes. Alibaba.com is the marketplace run by Alibaba Group, and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd files annual reports on Form 20-F with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Its latest annual report on EDGAR was filed on 2026-05-20. A platform being real does not tell you about any individual seller, though.

Are suppliers on Alibaba real?

That varies by seller. Alibaba’s buyer guide says anyone can list products on the platform, so sellers range from real manufacturers to unverified traders and scammers. Badges help, but they are not guarantees. Alibaba says verification does not guarantee product quality or ethical practices.

The badges work like this. A Gold Supplier is a business verified as legally registered by a third-party institution. A Verified Supplier is a Gold Supplier whose profile, management, production capabilities, products and processes have been assessed or inspected by third parties. Alibaba says this includes on-site verification by a third-party inspection company, with an assessment report open to all buyers, though it does not name that company. A Trade Assurance Supplier is a Gold Supplier that accepts payment through Alibaba.com.

Is it safe to buy from Alibaba?

It can be, if you pay through the platform and check the supplier before you order. Alibaba’s safety advice is to avoid transactions outside Alibaba.com, and its 2026 buyer guide lists red flags such as refusing video calls, refusing to show live factory footage, pushing you toward off-platform payment, and asking for full prepayment by wire transfer. Its own blog also calls a usually expensive product listed for very little a sign that something is wrong, and says well-known brands sold cheaply are likely knock-offs. Ask for a sample before a bulk order, as Alibaba recommends.

What does Trade Assurance cover?

Trade Assurance covers orders paid through Alibaba.com. Refunds are available if an item is not shipped, goes missing, or arrives with defects, incorrect items, damage or other product-related problems. If an order misses its scheduled date, you may receive delay compensation. Funds are held in escrow and released to the supplier only after you receive and confirm the product. Alibaba says it will help reach a resolution, which may include refunds or compensation. The Trade Assurance page gives no coverage limits or refund caps, so read the current terms before you rely on them. Payments made outside the platform cannot be protected.

How do I check an Alibaba supplier?

Start with the supplier’s badges and the verification report, then look at the business itself. Confirm the business licence, check that the supplier’s claims match what you see, and ask for a live video of the production floor and a sample. The Supplier legitimacy checker on this page turns these questions into a list of signals. You can also decode the unified social credit code and read the business scope to see whether the company describes itself as a manufacturer or a trader.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alibaba legit overall?

Alibaba.com is a real marketplace run by a company that files annual reports with the SEC. Whether a given order is legitimate depends on the supplier and on how you pay.

Is Alibaba safe to use if I pay through the platform?

Paying through Alibaba.com gives you Trade Assurance protection on eligible orders, which is much stronger than paying outside the platform. It does not remove the need to check the supplier.

Can you trust Alibaba suppliers with a Verified Supplier badge?

The badge means third parties assessed or inspected the business, and an assessment report is open to buyers. Alibaba says verification does not guarantee product quality or ethical practices, so read the report and check the product yourself.

Why should I never pay outside Alibaba’s platform?

Alibaba’s Help Center says payments made outside the platform cannot be protected. Requests to move a deal off-platform are one of the red flags Alibaba lists.

Does this checker verify a company’s registration?

It checks the format and check character of the unified social credit code and decodes the registering department, entity type and region code. It does not query any registry or website, so confirm the registration with the official source.

What should I do if a supplier asks me to change payment details by email?

Confirm the change through a separate channel, not by replying to the request. Check the sender address and links for misspelled domains. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center advises this for payment-change requests.

What if I have already been defrauded?

Contact your bank immediately and ask for a recall, then file a complaint at ic3.gov, as the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center advises.
