Alibaba Scam: Common Patterns and How to Spot Them
Check an offer against the patterns Alibaba and the FBI warn about. Nothing is uploaded and no website is queried.

How to use the Supplier legitimacy checker
- Choose where you found the supplier.
- Select the verification status shown on the supplier’s profile.
- Say whether Trade Assurance is offered.
- Write what the supplier claims to be.
- Pick how wide the product range is.
- Say what a third-party audit report shows, if one exists.
- Enter where the supplier asks you to pay and how much you must pay before shipping.
- Mark whether the supplier refused a live video of the production floor, a factory audit, the business licence or a sample.
- Say whether the price is far below other quotes you have received.
- Optional: enter the 18-character unified social credit code. The tool checks its check character and decodes the registering department, entity type and region code of the registration authority.
- Optional: paste the business scope in Chinese. The tool lists manufacturing words (生产, 制造, 加工) and trade words (批发, 销售, 进出口) with English glosses.
- Read the results. Signals are marked High, Medium, Reassuring or Note. Check the Looks like a manufacturer, Looks like a trading company or Unclear card, then work through the next checks list.
Press the Print checklist button to print a one-page check sheet.
The checker keeps everything in your browser tab. Use Try an example to see a high-risk offer filled in, and Clear all to start on another supplier.
What are the common Alibaba scams?
Common alibaba scams try to move your money out of the platform, ask for all of it up front, or sell something that is not what it claims to be. Alibaba’s own warnings point to the same patterns.
- Payment outside the platform. Alibaba’s Help Center says payments made outside the platform cannot be protected.
- Full prepayment by wire transfer. Alibaba’s 2026 buyer guide lists this as a red flag.
- Payment to a personal account, by Western Union, in crypto or in gift cards. All of these are outside the platform.
- A change of bank details in the middle of an order. The FBI advises confirming any change through a separate channel, not by replying to the request. Check the sender address and links for misspelled domains.
- Refusing video calls or live factory footage. Alibaba’s buyer guide lists these refusals as red flags.
- Well-known brands at very low prices. Alibaba advises that these are likely knock-offs.
- A usually expensive product listed for very little. Alibaba’s safety blog calls this a sign something is wrong.
- Moving the chat off the platform. Alibaba advises keeping all communication in its Message Center.
Anyone can list products on Alibaba. Sellers range from real manufacturers to unverified traders and scammers, so a listing alone does not show who you are dealing with.
How do I avoid being scammed on Alibaba?
Pay through Alibaba.com, and order a sample before you place a bulk order. Both steps keep your money protected and let you check the product before you commit to the full amount.
Alibaba recommends these habits, and the last two are our suggestions:
- Write a detailed purchase order that states the product, specification, quantity, price and delivery date.
- Arrange a production inspection before the goods ship.
- Keep all communication in the Message Center, so you have a record.
- Check the registration and business scope of the company, not just its marketing (our suggestion; see the verification guide).
- Before you pay a changed bank account, confirm the change by a separate channel, as the FBI advises.
Alibaba’s buyer guide also says that verification does not guarantee product quality or ethical practices. Inspections and samples are still your best evidence.

Frequently asked questions
What if I paid a supplier outside Alibaba?
Alibaba’s Help Center says payments outside the platform cannot be protected, so Trade Assurance will not cover them. Contact your bank immediately to request a recall of the funds, then file a report at ic3.gov. Keep all messages and documents, since they will help any report or bank claim.
Can Trade Assurance get my money back?
It can, for orders paid through Alibaba.com. Refunds are available if an item is not shipped, goes missing, or arrives with defects, incorrect items, damage or other product-related issues. Funds are held in escrow and released to the supplier only after you receive and confirm the product. The page gives no coverage limits or refund caps, and Alibaba says it will help reach a resolution, which may include refunds or compensation.
Does a Verified Supplier badge mean the supplier is safe?
No. Alibaba’s buyer page says a Verified Supplier has been assessed or inspected by third parties. Alibaba’s buyer guide adds that verification does not guarantee product quality or ethical practices. The on-site assessment report is open to all buyers, so read it before you decide.
Is Alibaba itself legit?
Alibaba’s buyer guide says the platform is authentic, but a platform being real does not vouch for every seller on it. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd files annual reports on Form 20-F with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, and the latest filing on EDGAR is dated 2026-05-20. Those reports cover the company, not the individual supplier you are considering.
Does this tool check the supplier for me?
No. It asks you questions and lists signals from your answers, with sources. It does not query any website, so use the next-checks list to decide what to verify yourself.
What should I do if I think I have been scammed on Alibaba?
If the order was paid on Alibaba.com, open a Trade Assurance claim through the platform. If you paid any other way, contact your bank immediately to request a recall, and file a complaint at ic3.gov. In both cases, keep every message, invoice and receipt.
